Indeed, it\u2019s hard to tell whether its father (or mother) was a Swiss quack, Madame Henriod, or Frenchman Pierre Ordinaire, some time around the end of the sixteenth century. <\/p>\n

Curioser and curioser, the ancient Egyptians were already drinking it some six hundred years before Christ!<\/p>\n

From 1850 onwards, it was enjoyed by the Parisian bourgeoisie, its praises sung by the likes of Zola,[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]Degas or Manet, and gradually extended its reach so that by 1900 it was the most widely drunk aperitif in France, with some 90% of market share.<\/p>\n

Accused of causing extreme alcohol intoxication, and targeted by various temperance leagues, absinthe disappeared following prohibition \u2013 in 1910 in Switzerland, and in 1915 in France. It could no longer be produced
\nor drunk.<\/p>\n
